A great purchase. Looks, Durability and Performance are excellent. September 8, 2010 Serenity808 (The Planet Earth) I purchased this for my 14" notebook.
The laptop fits perfectly, but I agree with Mr. J. Manarang in that a larger system would unquestionably benefit with a cooling pad of proportional size. For larger notebooks running in a desktop environment Thermaltake's got some decent stuff. Antec too, but both cost significantly more.
If you're looking to purchase a cooling pad I strongly suggest that you first analyze where your air intake, CPU, and GPU are and purchase one with fan(s) in subsequent areas.
I like the fact that with this unit, the fans can be removed and re-attached to the main member. The unit is very well designed and it definitely promotes air flow, fans or no fans. Thus, it offers maximum flexibility.
I rate it a solid 5 stars.
Cool.
Excellent cooling ability and a good price September 7, 2010 Star Wars Fan I originally bought a cooling pad from a major office supply store. It only lasted about four months before it stopped working. Next, I came to Amazon and compared the many different cooling pads offered. The main reason I picked this one is because the fans can be easily moved so that you can line them up exactly with the vents on your laptop. As a result, this cooling pad works MUCH better than the first one I bought. Even after using the laptop for a couple hours, the bottom of the laptop is still cool to the touch. It is very impressive.
Finally found one that does the job! September 5, 2010 E. Morrow (CA) I have a 17inch, 15inch and a netbook. All give heat in different areas. The 17inch in particular was hard to find a product to cool it. The fans for it are in the extreme left and right corners, and one fan has started to fail. I tried the Targus Lap Chill Mat AWE55US, before this one. While it was a great product, the fans are located in the middle, and not movable, also not as sturdy and had problems with the weight of the large laptop. It did nothing to keep the larger laptop cool. The Cooler Master was perfect. I was able to switch the fans position exactly where they were needed. The fans are easy to snap on and remove with the the push of a button. Airflow is abundant, and because the surface is full of small holes, it keeps the air from getting hot in any one place. It also does not tie up a USB slot, as the connecter has a slot to plug in items too. It is very sturdy and handles the weight of my large laptop with ease. It is not really made for sitting on your lap, so I use a padded lap desk with a flat surface to sit this and the laptop on, works perfect. If you have more than one item, with different heat issues, or are just looking for a reasonably priced (less than most of the others that did not cool as well), sturdy notebook cooler, I think you will be satisfied with this product, I was.
excellent product!! September 5, 2010 David J. Keevil I purchased two of these for our 17" laptops. My wife and I both have laptops that are most often used on a desk......go figure!
Anyway, we had severe heat issues with both units (a Toshiba and an HP) I made some pieces of wood to increase the distance under the unit for air which helped a lot but didn't solve the problem completely and it also looked "odd".
These unit are WONDERFUL!! Areas of the laptop which you could barely touch are actually cool now!
I am very very pleased. They are well made and very easy to move the fans to where you need the cooling air.
I got a 110 volt USB charger that I plug into a wall outlet and run the cooling fans from that instead of using the laptops USB ports. It works very well. I had read that sometimes the effort to keep the fans running increased the need for cooling when they are plugged into the laptop.
Purchase this product, they are very high quality, the newer ones have a variable speed fan but I figured that was just another part to break!
These fans (4 total with two computers) are absolutely whisper quiet. The only way one knows they are running is by putting your hand under the unit and feel the air movement.
Good product, but cooling not quite as effective as hoped September 4, 2010 tangofan (Mountain View, CA USA) The Cooler Master is a very solidly built product. The two fans clip into the holes on the bottom, so they can be moved around to the hot spots on your laptops or the air intake vents. The fans get their power via a USB cord, which has a pass-through connector on the computer side, so you can still connect another device to that port. The downside of this construction is that the cord connects to the side of the USB connector, so you may have problems using it with a USB hub, because it blocks the adjacent connector.
I do not plan to carry this unit around, but if you want to it doesn't occupy much extra space, when carrying your laptop, because you can use the enclosed strap to fix it to your laptop.
I have a Thinkpad T61p with gets extremely hot without any kind of additional cooling, when playing a game. After my laptop's main-board died two weeks ago (luckily still under warranty), I was looking for a solution for the cooling problem. The first approach was to use a utility program called TPFanControl to have the internal fans rotating more aggressively. Playing my game (Lord of the Rings Online) for about 5-10 minutes, the CPU temperature was at 73°c and the GPU temperature was at 72°C respectively, around a 4-5°C drop from using the standard BIOS settings for the fan control.
After receiving the Cooler Master, I removed the Thinkpad from its docking station and placed it on the unit, but didn't connect the power for the fans yet. Playing the same game sequence again, the temperature dropped to 70°C for the CPU and 72°C for the GPU. After connecting the fan and letting the computer cool down a bit, I ran through the same game sequence one more time. This time the temperatures were 68°C for the CPU and 69°C for the GPU.
All in all I'm pretty happy with this product, though I was hoping for a stronger cooling effect. That's why I'm only giving it 4 stars. Perhaps though from a certain point on, the problem is simply heat generation and not heat dissipation. And I supposed that even a few degrees matter, especially since my laptop's warranty is over pretty soon.
So I'd recommend this to anyone looking to cool down their laptop. Just keep your expectations in check.
