2 out of 5 stars Reconditioned, more like "used"   August 31, 2010

When this trimmer arrived it was dirty, scratched, had oil dripping out of it, was missing 2 bolts, and would not run very well. The bolts that hold the string winder on and the hanle were nowhere to be found in the box. This item had oil in it and the tank smelled of gas. I don't think any reconditioning was done. It would start up but barely ran, smoked and sputtered. I called Ryobi customer service and they said to take it to an authorized repair facility. So I took it to McKay Hardware in Holly, MI. They had it running with the bolts replaced in a couple of hours at no charge to me.
Buying this is good way to get a trimmer cheaper but they put the job of getting it fixed on you. Since the item holds gas and oil you cannot send it back (funny, they sent it to me with oil in it and smelling of gas). So you have to get it repaired. At lease it has a 1 year warranty on it. Consider it a USED item if you buy it. I have used it 3 times since the repair and it seems to be ok now.

1 out of 5 stars Please avoid this item   August 23, 2010

I needed a line trimmer in the worst way prior to purchasing this model and that is exactly what I got. The unit cranks easily enough but it leaks oil and fuel onto the gas tank and then onto your pants, coveralls, etc. The unit I have will run for approximately 4-5 minutes and then shuts off and will not re-start until it has cooled down. I have not been impressed. Do yourself a favor and pick up a different 4-stroke line trimmer. I contacted Ryobi customer support and got the recommendation to take it to a Ryobi service center. No suggestions as to any adjustments I could try. For a company that makes such superior electric hand tools, this is a terrible stain on your reputation. Best I can tell, there is no high-speed throttle adjustment, only an idle adjustment. I wish there was a way to give negative stars in a review.

I would like to know Amazon's definition of "new". This item was advertised as new. Clearly not new. Probably, what they mean is you can't keep it running long enough to actually use it. Trimming & edging by hand is easier than starting & keeping this piece of **** running. The box it arrived in was torn open. Not a Ryobi box, by the way. All the pieces were just loose in the box. That is, the pieces that hadn't fallen out of the box & were lost. Bad, bad, bad. In order to even return it, I would have to find a box, take it apart & repackage it, go to the PO to ship it. Then I would probably be charged for the parts that fell out of the box when shipped to me. Easier to just "eat" the $99 & resolve never to buy anything else from Amazon.

I got this product and I am very pleased with the quality of the product. The manual it came with was a little lacking, but the trimmer works great and it was at a great price. When I recieved the trimmer, I assembled it, filled with appropriat oil and gas and it started on the second pull. despite what the instructions say, you do need to give it some gas when you crank

1 out of 5 stars Worst purchase yet - Dont be fooled   July 23, 2010

So, after reading reviews I decided to give this thing a try anyway. Not so smart.

Came in the mail in 2 days, looked to be in decent shape. A bit dirty but has new componet parts. Only problem, no MANUAL (Thanks, Amazon!)

Filled 'er up with gas, pulled the cord a few times, and we're off and running fine.

10 minutes go by - cuts off once. Crank it back with no problem. Does this about 5 more times after running for about 1-2 minutes each time. Goes out again...haven't been able to get it started back yet. Given it about 100 pulls.

Waiting on it to "cool down" like others said they've had to do...going to see if I can't get my $ back on this one...
